Wall Mount Electrical Box: Surface Installation Enclosures

Wall Mount Electrical Box: Surface Installation Enclosures - IDIS India

If you’re looking for an electrical box to mount to the wall, this product can meet your needs. Surface-mounted enclosures are a good option for electrical contractors who need flexibility and an affordable way to install electrical systems in industrial and commercial buildings. At I-closure, we have been helping installers select the right wall-mounted electrical box since 2017. With surface-mounted boxes, you will not have to work inside the wall, and your electrical components are easily accessible, but they will still have the appropriate protection level. What is the best mounting approach to fit your particular application?

Surface Mount Bracket Selection for Electrical Boxes

The bracket type will make or break how well your installation is done. I-closure wall-mount electrical boxes use built-in flanges that are designed to hold 4 points, which distributes the weight evenly across the surface you are mounting to. When looking at brackets to use, also keep in mind: The flange thickness can range from 2-4 mm depending on the size of the enclosureYou will find the hole patterns for mounting follow the standard spacing of boxes, so they will work for all applicationsThe mounting screws are made of stainless steel so they don’t strip threads during installationThe gasketing channels will provide a weatherproof seal between the box and wall, so you will not have leaks

Enclosures manufactured by IDIS India will have the mounting holes already drilled, which will align with standard electrical box spacing. This minimizes the amount of time to install, as well as reduces the chance of having to make modifications in the field.

Wall Substrate Anchoring Methods

Wall Substrate Anchoring Methods

Different wall types require specific anchoring approaches. Your wall mount electrical box installation depends on proper anchor selection and placement.

Wall TypeRecommended AnchorTypical Load Rating
Concrete/MasonryExpansion anchorsStarting from 50kg per point
Metal StudSelf-drilling screwsApproximately 25kg per point
Wood FrameLag boltsSubject to wood species
Hollow BlockThrough-boltsMay vary by block density

Always verify anchor ratings with manufacturer specifications. Load requirements depend on enclosure size, cable loads, and environmental factors like wind loading.

Flush vs Proud Installation Techniques

Both aesthetics and function are influenced by installation depth of electrical equipment on walls. When mounting electrical boxes and receptacles, you have two options in terms of their installation depth: flush mount and proud mount. Please find the flush mounting benefits below: The appearance is much cleaner than if it were to be mounted proud; little chance of being damaged from an accident; better integration with building elements. Proud mount advantages: Easier routing and accessibility for maintaining cable; better dissipation of heat from loaded circuits; and simplified wiring from conduit. The mounting enclosure will work for all methods of mounting, with a sealing system that provides an effective seal regardless of its depth of installation.

Cable Entry Conduit Alignment

Proper electrical conduit placement will make your project easier to install and comply with electrical code. When you install wall-mounted electrical boxes, the location of the conduit entrance is critical. Make sure to create your conduit routing plan before you install the enclosure. Once the routing has been completed, mark the entry locations on both the enclosure and the wall so you can match the conduit alignment to your electrical design. Some of your standard entrances to your electrical enclosure include: • Knockouts for field drilled entrances • Pre-fabricated conduit hubs (standard sizes) • Cable Gland Mounting Threads • Liquid Tight Connector Provisions

IDIS India can also provide you with custom size entrances to meet your specific project needs. Please contact us directly regarding lead times and custom modification capabilities.

Mounting Height Code Requirements

Mounting heights for various applications are established by the electrical code and must be followed for all installations of the electrical box on the wall. The codes will vary by location, so ensure you install the electrical box as required by your local electrical code. Following are general guidelines regarding installation heights: Switches — Generally between 48 and 54 inches to the center; Receptacles — Generally between 12 and 18 inches above the floor; Disconnect switches — Typically 6 feet max to the operating handle; Junction boxes — Subject to meeting accessibility requirements. Some industrial installations may have different requirements due to access of the equipment and safety considerations. Always check with the local electrical inspector before starting an installation.

Wall Penetration Sealing Systems

Wall Penetration Sealing Systems

Proper sealing for wall penetrations is necessary for maintaining IP65/IP67-rated (water-resistant) products. The electrical box’s wall-mounted electrical enclosure must interface with the envelope of the building in a weather-tight manner. Perimeter gaskets on I-closure enclosures are designed to compress against the wall. However, you may need further sealing solutions based on the type of wall and the specifics of the wall penetrations. Be sure to consider proper sealing techniques such as: Applying silicone sealant to the perimeter of the enclosure, Integrating flashing on exterior walls, Co-ordinating vapor barriers (in insulated walls), and Providing for expansion joints (in large buildings). Proper sealing eliminates the potential for intrusion into the enclosure by water over the life of the enclosure and maintains its protective rating (IP) for water.

Load Transfer Distribution Analysis

The load paths associated with your electrical enclosure are a primary predictor of how long the installation will last. The wall-mounted electrical box is responsible for transferring different types of loads to the supporting structure. Each of the load types consists of:

The dead load (weight of the enclosure plus all internal components), live load (accessing the enclosure by maintenance personnel), environmental load (forces from wind, seismic, or thermal expansion), and cable load (the weight of supported conduits and cables). The four-point mounting system allows for equal distribution of the above-mentioned loads when mounted correctly. Make certain that adequate wall structure is available at the mounting location to support these loads. If you are mounting a large enclosure or loading multiple cables, you may want to install additional support brackets or backing plates to limit the amount of concentrated stress on the mounting hardware.

Choosing the Right Wall Mount Solution

Installation applications can be different from each other. You should keep your application in mind when selecting a wall-mounted electrical box. The following are the key factors to consider when selecting a wall-mounted electrical box for your application. What level of environmental exposure will this device experience (indoor/outdoor)? What is the minimum required IP rating (IP65/IP67)? Does the internal component generate any heat? How often does the device need to be accessed for maintenance? Will appearance matter? I-closure offers multiple sizes and configurations of both ABS and Polycarbonate box wall mounts. Our team can assist you in determining which solution will work best for the requirements of your project. Do you still have questions about selecting your wall-mounted electrical box?
